VP Racing Fuels Salute to Sponsor Night Sees Rain in its Forecast April 25, 2009: With inclement weather vastly approaching, it was a race against the clock Saturday night at Canandaigua Speedway as officials and drivers pulled together to bring yet another unforgettable show to the fans here at the Land of Legends. The rain wasn’t about to ruin Matt Sheppard’s parade as he ended the night where he left off last week, cruising into victory lane for a celebratory moment with fans and sponsors!
Big Block Modified Thanks to the continuing efforts of Canandaigua Speedway’s track crew, the green flag was able to drop on the VP Racing Fuels 110 35, despite on and off showers, as pole sitter Brian Swarthout led the charge going into the first circuit. Shortly after the fall of the green flag, Swarthout would succumb to Canandaigua’s fury as a mishap in turns three and four gave Justin Hears, currently running in second, an opening to secure the lead position. By lap 15, Matt Sheppard had worked his way up from a 16th place start to third place after passing both Del Rougeux Jr. and Steve Paine with a pass to the outside, while Haers continued to look strong in the leader’s spot. A harrowing moment during lap 18 would send caution flags flying as Ron Cartwright Jr. aboard the 2b lost power in the front straightaway causing a chain reaction as the #7 of Paul Guererri had no where else to go, colliding into Cartwright full throttle into turn one. As debris was cleared and the drivers checked out to be ok, the remaining drivers lined up for the final restart of the night. As action resumed, Sheppard for the second week in a row was clearly to strong for the pack as he rocketed away from Haers for the lead and ultimately the win. “The car was awesome,” replied Sheppard. “Had my doubt’s about tonight starting about dead last but we drove up there about as nicest as can be, that’s probably the deepest I’ve ever started before.”
Top Five: Matt Sheppard, Justin Haers, Steve Paine, Gary Tomkins and Dave Rauscher Sportsman Modified Eric Giguere aboard the 67g hit all the right spots during Saturday night’s VP Racing Fuels C12 25, holding off the 99$ of Anthony Rizzardo after rain delays kept the 27 car field in limbo. Justin Henderson in the 18H found early success ricocheting past Greg Cool, Randy McCulloch, and pole sitter Billy Brown within the first few circuits of racing. But as the rain began to fall halfway through the feature, the rain drops seemed to of cooled off Henderson’s hot streak relegating him back to third as the Canadian hot shot, Rizzardo set up shop in the number one spot. With Rizzardo quickly separating himself from the field, Giguere currently running in second began tracking the leader as a three car pile on lap 17 brought out the yellow flag. A three car pile up during the seventeenth circuit involving the 20x of Kevin Ridley, 17d of Marcus Dinkins, and 22 of Greg Cool sent the remaining players to a single file restart with just eight laps to go. Giguere would be too much for the 99$ on the restart, passing Rizzardo going into the back straightaway where he would continue to stay atop the field despite Rizzardo’s attempts during the final circuit. “If it wasn’t for the caution, I wouldn’t of been able to catch 99”, recanted Giguere at Victory Lane. “But at the restart I knew I couldn’t give him the restart, cause I knew he’d get away from me.” Top Five: Eric Giguere, Anthony Rizzardo, Steve Gray, Todd Henderson and Daryl Hilkert Street Stock It was a battle between the double zeros as teammates Mike Rasbeck in the #00r and last week’s feature winner, Mike Welch aboard the #00 exchanged positions throughout the Coke 20 feature for yet another exciting finish in the Street Stock division for the second week in a row. Pole sitter Frank Burnell relinquished his lead position to Nate Peckham going into turn four of the opening lap as a flat right rear tire deflated his surge to stay a top the field. But with Rasbeck in second followed by Welch in the number three spot, Peckham would have to battle the pair if he looked to stay on top. However the boys would have to wait for the rain to subside in order to settle this score as a caution during lap 6 due to the weather sent the remaining nine players to the line for the restart. The duo would ultimately be too much for the leader at the conclusion of the ninth circuit as Rasbeck commanded the lead spot followed behind by Welch. Action was still to be had in the night’s feature as Andy Fisk had some shuffling up to do as he entered into a three-way battle for positioning with the double zero boys and as lap 16 and 17 fell, fans were sent to their feet once more as Rasbeck, Welch, and Fisk went three wide on the front straightaway. With one lap to go, Welch would squeeze by both Fisk and Rasbeck to take home the checkered flag for the second consecutive week. Top Five: Mike Welch, Andy Fisk, Mike Rasbeck, Nate Peckham, and Chris Fisher
Pure Stox Debuting at Canandaigua Speedway, Alex Morris rode his car into victory lane at the conclusion of the Pure Stox feature after a somewhat hectic start for the Pure Stox division. “We had a blast tonight, and hopefully we’ll be back,” recanted Morris on tonight’s win here at Canandaigua Speedway.
