STEVE PAINE WINS AGAIN AT CANANDAIGUA SPEEDWAY. CAN HE BE STOPPED? CANANDAIGUA, NY-It was another beautiful night at the Canandaigua Speedway as beautiful weather greeted a good field of race cars and a great crowd last Saturday evening. The BRP 360 Late Model Black Rock/Canandaigua Challenge ran its second of the last three scheduled 2010 events at Canandaigua Speedway. For the second week in a row, race officials didn’t have to fight Mother Nature in order to get its race program completed as all racing action was concluded in less than three hours. Bass Pro Shops of Auburn and race followers of DIRTcar Sportsman driver Todd Henderson watched from the VIP Towers as race sponsors while Bass Pro representative Shane Wilkinson threw the green flag to start the Sportsman feature.
Probably the big story of the night was the dominance of veteran DIRTcar big block Modified star Steve Paine. The Waterloo, NY resident won his third straight main event and fifth of the 2010 season. Paine took the lead on lap 14 from early leader Tim Currier and maintained a safe lead through the remainder of the race. Currier, who won his first DIRTcar big block Modified feature at Canandaigua in June, looked impressive as he held on for second place. Third was Derrick Podsiadlo followed by Charlie Donk and Vic Coffey. Stock Car driver Chris Fisher took a well deserved trip to victory lane Saturday night at Canandaigua Speedway after a grueling 20 lap battle. Fisher ran the majority of the race with a half track lead until a yellow flag was dropped with two laps to go. During the green-white checkered Fisher had a run in on the last lap with current Stock Car point leader Bubba Burnell. Fisher was able to hold on as Bubba spun out on his back bumper, ending Bubba’s night. Andy Fisk and Mike Rasbeck contributed in the battle as they ran side-by-side for a second and third place finish. Jason Whipple and Mike Welch finished out your top five. The Dart Dirt BRP Late Models made their return to the Land of Legends for another round of the Black Rock/Canandaigua Challenge Series. Jeff Chesbro took the checkered flag to make him one step closer to winning an all expense paid trip to Hawaii. Adam DePuy gave Chesboro some pressure as he finished second. Brian Kotarski, Dick Park Jr. and Jon Rivers round out your top five. After a nine year hiatus Karl Comfort found himself back in a familiar place as he rolled into victory lane. Even with a nine year vacation from racing Comfort hasn’t missed a beat as he dominated the track Saturday night. Steve Gray, Rob Bussey, Chris Mangarelli and Tom Keyes claim the top five positions. LAND OF LEGENDS NOTES: Vic Coffey, a two time Rite Aid 200 DIRTcar big block Modified winner, has been at Canandaigua Speedway for the past two weeks and ran to a fifth place finish last Saturday. Coffey had been committed to his World of Outlaws Late Model in past years but now seems to be staying closer to home these days…Canandaigua Speedway will be closed this Saturday, July 17th as the Cayuga County Fair Speedway will be hosting the second annual All-Star Weekend. The track will reopen for racing on Saturday, July 24th with a full card of racing. Canandaigua Speedway will again close their gates on Saturday, July 31st as the Ontario County Fair celebrates its fair days…Point leaders for the Canandaigua Speedway are Modified-Steve Paine, Sportsman-Steve Gray, Stock Cars-Frank Burnell Jr. and Factory Stocks/Pure Stocks-Alex Morris. Fans that arrived to the track early were given the chance to meet one of their favorite drivers as Modified competitor Marcus Dinkins was on hand to sign autographs. The next autograph session will take place on July 24 at the DIRTcar Merchandise Trailer will be from 5:30-6:00. The popular event continues to draw interest and helps race fans prepare for the night’s activities.
